Types of fittonii

Types of Fittonia

Homeland Fittonii - South America. This plant is from the Acanta family. The name was given in honor of Elizabeth and Sary-Maria Fitton - the sisters, who at the beginning of the XIX century created the first classic textbook on botany. Two types of fittonia are grown as indoor plants, domestic plants - Verschaffelt and silver-like fittonia. The second type is not in great demand, but Vershafelt is being bought up with a huge rush.

  • Silver-topped fittonia has oval-shaped leaves. They are green with silver veins. One of the most popular varieties of the species is "Nana". It has small leaves (up to 2.5 cm) and is very simple to grow.
Interesting! Fittonia cleans the air in the room from harmful microorganisms and saturates it with moisture.
  • Fittonia Verschaffelt is a perennial with surface roots and creeping shoots. Stems up to 10 cm in height, densely pubescent. Leaves elliptical to 10 cm in length. They are almost bare, dull, green with a network of pink veins. Flowers are small, collected in inflorescences.
  • Fittonia large in room conditions is almost not grown. It is a tropical species with a pubescent, reddish stalk up to 50 cm high. The leaves are green, up to 15 cm long, glossy, oblong with veins of red.

For some growers, fittonia is a simple indoor plant. Other flower growers complain about the capriciousness of the culture, so it is impossible to say for sure if going to home care would cause great difficulties. If you pick a good place for a flower, adjust watering, lighting, temperature, then it really will not cause problems.

  • For the pot is chosen a place not at once. Usually flower growers move it from place to place for several months to determine exactly where the plant will be best. For a culture of movement is not dangerous, but you need to closely monitor its condition. If an ideal site is found, where both light and heat suffice, where fittonia literally blooms, then it is left there.
  • To fittonia light demanding. She needs a lot of light, although direct sunlight can burn beautiful leaves. So they always put the pot on the lighted place and, if necessary, light on it.

Fittonia care

Important! If the Fittonia flower is placed in the shade, the shoots will begin to stretch, and the leaves will become faded, dull color.
  • The temperature for the flower is maintained at an average level of + 22 ... +25 degrees. If it drops to +17, then a variety of diseases can begin to develop.
  • Fittonia does not like drafts and sharp fluctuations in temperature. That is why even in summer it is not carried out on the street and kept in the house. Airing of the room is carried out carefully (you can even take the flower to another room for a while).
  • Regular watering is very important to comply! If the earth lump dries out even once, the fittonia will begin to actively drop the leaves and this process will be very difficult to stop. At the same time, water should also not stand, because it provokes root rot.
  • Humidity is kept high in both summer and winter. If the air is dry, you can spray the plant 1-2 times a day from the sprayer. The second variant of air humidification is to place an open container with water in the pot. You can throw decorative pebbles into it for beauty.
Interesting! Fittonii is inherent in transpiration. In other words, it can evaporate moisture through the leaves, so it is recommended to regularly check the soil for moisture and, if necessary, add water!
  • To get a neat bush, it is necessary from time to time to pinch the tops of the stems.
  • After 3-4 years, so that the culture does not lose its aesthetics (at this time it drops the lower leaves), it is partially trimmed. As a rule, old shoots are cut off, but so that the plant has several young pagon with leaves on it.

Breeding fittonii

Fittonia breeding

Fittonia reproduction is carried out by three methods: cuttings, layering and dividing the bush.

  • The division of the bush is carried out in the spring, during transplantation. The roots are carefully cut into several pieces with a disinfected instrument, and each is planted in a separate pot. Places cut with shredded charcoal.
  • In spring or summer you can cut from a plant cuttings of 6-7 cm in length. Each must contain 3-5 leaves. The resulting cuttings are placed in a glass of water and waiting for the roots to appear. Instead of water, you can use sphagnum, peat tablets or sand. Any of the last options is well moistened, and as it dries up water is added. The top of the stem is covered with a plastic, transparent cap. When the roots appear, the plants are transplanted into pots.
  • When breeding by layering, you need to find a long shoot and clean it from leaves. Then it is bent to the ground and added dropwise. The code will be given to the roots, it is carefully cut off from the mother plant and, if necessary, transplanted into a new pot.

Fittonia flower

Flower fittonia grows and develops very quickly. Accordingly, the root system grows actively, so you need to replant the plant often. Transplantation is carried out annually in spring. If the plant is already an adult, large, it is possible to transplant every 2-3 years. This will be more than enough.

Important! It is recommended to keep fittonia away from any heating devices: heaters, radiators, stoves, as overheating can cause fading.

Before replanting fittonia, you should find or buy a good pot (3-5 cm more in diameter). Below it should have holes for water drainage. And the material of the pot is chosen at the discretion of the grower. The soil is made quite simple: part of the sand, part of the peat, part of the humus and 3 parts of leafy ground. All this is well mixed and used for planting.

First of all, a layer of drainage is placed in a new pot, and then a thin layer of earth. The plant is taken out of the former pot, slightly grabbed the ground and planted in a new pot, sprinkling earth on all sides. That's all - it remains only to properly care for the culture, then it will please the grower with its decorative qualities.
